Water is a basic natural resource simply because no organisms can live without water in its body.
Water is a very special compound. Even if its just made of two atoms of hydrogen and an atom of oxygen, it is used in various cellular functions which serve as the foundation of life itself. This is also what makes earth a livable planet, aside from being in the Goldilocks zone in the solar system. This is why we search for clues of water on Mars, since the existence of water poses the possibility of life on a surface of a planet.
