Disavatages Of Sexual Reprodruction

Disavatages of sexual reprodruction

While sexual reproduction indeed brings about genetic diversity, it also has its own disadvantages. Listed below are some of them:

  • Risk for miscarriage - during gestation, the female organism is vulnerable from different threats such as predators and diseases. This puts the unborn child and the mother at risk. The child may become underdeveloped and in worst cases, be stillborn due to stresses and pressures around the mother.
  • Finding a mate - sexual reproduction, unlike asexual reproduction, requires two organisms to reproduce. This means finding a mate, and not just any other mate. The mate has to be suitable and healthy for the offspring to be healthy and survive once born. Finding a mate also uses up resources and energy.
  • Lesser offspring - while some organisms are able to produce many offspring, even through sexual reproduction, the number of organisms produced in asexual reproduction still triumphs over sexual reproduction. Sexual reproduction also requires more time and energy for reproducing.
